Media Coverage

Gold Camp Castlemaine was fortunate to receive excellent newspaper coverage for our Winter Auction. Two regional papers put us on the front page. This caused a flurry of interest in the Captain John Edward Newell Bull portrait painted by Jennifer Barnett. This portrait was painted from a photograph. This is the only known painting of the excellent Captain Bull. It was purchased by a local who is also passionate about Castlemaine history and Captain Bull’s legacy. He was the first to register, and bid strongly until he secured this historic piece.

Captain Bull is the hero of Camp Reserve, being an extraordinary leader of the Government Camp and the vast goldfields, and a pivotal founding father of the township of Castlemaine. Bull was passionate about the Military Parade ground and had it preserved for future generations to enjoy. He instigated the planting of the English Elm carriageway and wrote to the papers to protect this green space from private acquisition.

We appreciate the professionalism of these articles and thank Lisa Denis and Gabriel Rule.
