The Military, the Police and the Government Camp, Castlemaine. 1851 – 1861, by Dr Bob Marmion, has been published by GCC. This book traces the turmoil of the early years of the police and military at the Government Camp, then looks at the gradual change in public perception toward the police. It follows the removal of the hated Imperial redcoats in 1858 and formation of the Volunteer force in Castlemaine, made up of local citizen soldiers.
